Seamus Heaney, Readings

Seamus Heaney (1939–) was born into a Catholic family on a farm in Derry, a largely Protestant area of Northern Ireland, but near the border of the Irish Republic. After the local primary school at Anahorish, he won scholarships to St. Columb's College and to Queen's University, Belfast. It was at Queen's that he became a member of the Belfast Group. Heaney lives in Dublin and teaches at Harvard University. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. His translation of Beowulf (1999) won the Whitbread Award.
