Social Psychology’s unique chapter organization presents the most fundamentally social topics first. Part I, Connecting to Others, contains chapters on "Groups," "Attraction," "Relationships" and "The Social Self," which are often the most intriguing topics to introductory students, and their placement here is designed to captivate students early and draw their interest to later chapters. Part II, Influencing Others, extends this discussion to three interrelated aspects of social influence: face-to-face social influence through conformity, obedience, and compliance; attitudes and persuasion, including the effect of the mass media; and the mutual influence that attitudes and behavior have on one another. Part III, Social Thought, directly addresses how construal shapes actions in three chapters that deal with explanations of behavior, social judgment, and stereotyping. Part IV, Social Sentiments, concludes the text with three chapters that focus on social sentiments—on the basics of emotion, on how passions inspire altruism and aggression, and how they infuse our sense of morality and justice and our desire to cooperate.
A flexible teaching tool, Social Psychology treats core topics in self-contained chapters with coverage of research methodology integrated throughout, allowing instructors to assign chapters as they appear or in any order they deem appropriate.
