Online Tutor:

  • Chapter Reviews–These engaging reviews reiterate the main points of the chapter.
  • Conceptual Quizzes–Each quiz begins with a standard multiple-choice question. After students respond, the quiz gives them more information to consider and the opportunity to change their answer. Thorough explanations follow each question, ensuring that students understand the concepts behind the correct answer.
  • Exercises–"Institutional Reform" and "Analyzing American Politics" exercises, which conclude the online tutor, invite students to recall information discussed in the opening review and to apply the critical thinking skills stressed in the conceptual quiz.

News Updates:

In addition to the Online Tutor, the American Government Web site features a series of news updates designed to spark conversation and forge a connection between textbook themes and current affairs.

  • "Politics in the News" Listserv (Paul Gronke, Reed College)
This biweekly service emails articles from The New York Times to subscribers. Paul Gronke prefaces each article with a list of relevant chapters in the text.
  • "Students and Politics"
This resource compiles articles from college newspapers, exposing students to the opinions and insights of their peers across the United States.
  • "Attack on America"
This article examines the implications of the September 11 attacks from historical, political, and domestic and foreign policy perspectives, as well as the attacks’ effect on civil liberties.

Simulations for American Government
wwnorton.com/college/polisim_lowi7.htm
W. W. Norton is proud to announce interactive, electronic role-playing simulations for American Government. These online simulations provide students with hands-on experience of how government works. Students receive productive feedback on their decisions (sometimes in the form of job-approval ratings) and can go through each simulation multiple times to see how different answers affect the outcome. Simulations take ten to fifteen minutes to complete and have printable results students can take to class for discussion; best of all, they are designed to support both individual use and classroom demonstrations.
