Highlights
A simple framework focuses on the basic concepts and core theories.
Professor Mingst provides a simple framework based on the main theories in international relations and levels of analysis. This effective approach teaches students to think like political scientists while allowing instructors the flexibility to emphasize diverse events and issues. Features of the text include:
- Contending theoretical perspectives applied throughout. Chapter 3 presents the basic theoretical perspectives in IR: not only liberalism and realism, but also constructivism, Marxism, radicalism, and feminism. In each subsequent chapter, these contending perspectives are explicitly applied to the topic at hand.
- A levels of analysis approach that provides students with a useful analytical tool. Professor Mingst examines issues and events at the international, state, and individual levels. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 each present one of the levels, and subsequent chapters employ all three.
- Smart pedagogy that consistently reinforces the basic theory and concepts:
- "Theory in Brief" boxes in every chapter break theory down to help students grasp it.
- "In Focus" boxes in every chapter reinforce important concepts for review.
- "Essential Debate" boxes apply the concepts and theory to controversial contemporary issues.
- Tables, maps, timelines, and conceptual diagrams are thoughtfully integrated throughout.
- NEW "International Perspectives" boxes invite students to consider key issues from a foreign point of view. In addition to updating the entire text based on recent events, Professor Mingst has added "International Perspectives" boxes to every chapter. These boxes use concepts from the text to consider an issue from the perspective of those outside the United States. Examples include "Security and Nuclear Weapons: A View from Iran" and "Pollution and Environmental Policy: A View from Indonesia."
- An unbeatable price Essentials of International Relations is the most affordable leading text for introductory world politics courses. When packaged together, the text and accompanying reader cost less than most competing books alone. See the following page for package information.
