Highlights
Consistent organizational framework promotes comparison.
By organizing each case around the same framework, the authors help students make comparisons among the countries as they read. For example, when reading about the political economy or society of one country, students can turn to any other case in the text and easily find information to make a direct comparison. The introductory chapter outlines how the framework is applied and offers a primer on the concepts that are discussed in each case.
Helpful pedagogy ensures effective study and review.
Each case includes the following pedagogical features to help students review important points and compare cases:
- Introductory boxes at the start of each case list the basic facts about the country (population, size, GDP, head of state, and so forth)
- “In Comparison” graphs compare various aspects of each country’s politics—voter turnout or economic growth, for example—with those same aspects of the other countries in the book
- Timelines outline important political events
- Key terms help students review
- Web links offer suggestions for further reading
- Anecdotal boxes cover topics of special interest
