Overview
The authoritative text reprinted in this volume is that of the 1912 Wessex edition (revised and corrected by Hardy himself).
This accurate version is thoroughly and carefully annotated and includes the author’s short preface and the postscript.
This Norton Critical Edition provides rich source materials: selections from Hardyís Autobiography relevant to the novel and to Hardyís views of fiction, a number of Hardyís poems, and studies by Richard L. Purdy, John Paterson, and Carl J. Weber that show how Hardy composed and revised The Return of the Native.
The editor has written a special account of the folklore background of Hardy’s novels.
The critical voices in this volume include those of Joseph Warren Beach, D. H. Lawrence, Frank Chapman, Allen Tate, Katherine Anne Porter, Donald Davidson, Harvey Curtis Webster, John Holloway, George Wing, Charles Child Walcutt, Lord David Cecil, and R. W. Stallman.
