Highlights
Strengthened Emphasis on Literacy as a Theme
The editors have incorporated more selections and assignments that stress literacy as a theme and have included an introductory sequence that asks students to write a literacy autobiography.
Attention to Cross-Disciplinary Selections
In keeping with the focus on the "literacy practices" of different communities, the editors have added readings from disciplines outside the humanities and social sciences, including new selections from the natural sciences, law, business, and medicine.
"Invitations to Read and Write"
Brief writing prompts that ask students to reflect on how they read and write and to try out new ways of reading and writing. New invitations include "Framing an Argument," "Integrating Quotations with Interpretation," and "Responding to a Peer’s Draft."
Assignment Sequences
Combine selections in topical units that connect reading and writing in a progression of assignments. Sequences 1-5 address questions of literacy, while 6-13 treat other thematic and disciplinary questions. In every sequence, students receive guidance in developing their interpretive and analytical skills.
