The Ninth Edition continues to offer deep contextual analysis, adding two new contextual chapters focusing on aspects of African American and African history. These chapters provide students with an abundance of textual and visual material to encourage and facilitate research, writing, and discussion.
- Cultural and Historical Contexts in the Drama section focuses on two playsóLorraine Hansberry’s Raisin in the Sun and Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman. Professor Mays has prepared a substantial introduction for this chapter, complete with photos and other visuals, as well as a selection of essays that further discuss the context surrounding the two plays.
- Cultural and Historical Contexts in the Poetry section focuses on the Harlem Renaissance, complete with visuals and other contextual material.
Completely Revised Pedagogy
The Ninth Edition of The Norton Introduction to Literature offers a completely revised and refreshed suite of pedagogical elements, all of them designed to help students read, think about, and write about literature as creatively and analytically as possible.
In addition to revising nearly all editorial introductions, the editors have rewritten all end-of-selection questions and writing suggestions, selected all new student writing examples, added even more visual resources, and completely rewritten the anthologyís comprehensive guide to writing about literature and critical approaches.
To encourage students to use the invaluable media resources that accompany the text, the Ninth Edition calls out works featured on the Audio Companion to The Norton Introduction to Literature or on the accompanying Web site with CD or WWW icons.
