Project Partners
W. W. Norton & Company, the oldest and largest publishing house owned wholly by its employees, carries out the imperative of its founder to "publish books not for a single season, but for the years." The roots of the company date back to 1923, when William Warder Norton and Margaret D. Herter Norton began publishing lectures delivered at the People’s Institute, the adult education division of New York City’s Cooper Union. Norton has since earned a reputation for its distinguished publishing programs in both the trade and the college areas, with particular strengths in music, history, psychology, and literature. Begun in the 1960s, the Norton Anthologies have changed the teaching of literature worldwide. Norton now publishes close to 400 books a year; its 220 employees remain dedicated to independent publishing.
Annenberg/CPB, a partnership between The Annenberg Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), uses media and telecommunications to advance excellent teaching in American schools. Annenberg/CPB funds educational series and professional development workshops for teachers for the Annenberg/CPB Channel, which is distributed free by satellite to schools and other educational and community organizations worldwide.
Oregon Public Broadcasting is recognized nationally as a producer of high-quality educational materials and PBS primetime programs. Earlier projects funded by Annenberg/CPB include The Unseen Universe: An Introduction to Microbiology (12x30 telecourse) and A World of Art: Works in Progress (10x30 telecourse), a ten-part series on contemporary artists. Oregon Public Broadcasting is currently producing Rediscovering Biology (13x30) and Make it New! (8x60), each a multimedia series for teacher professional development.
