Highlights
Emphasizes Understanding over Memorization
Professor Jones anticipates those concepts that students need preparation to understand and targets potential problems by:
- including substantial review sections from general chemistry that are essential to understanding organic chemistry;
- introducing some difficult topics in spiral fashion, with preview and review sections in different chapters;
- integrating discussions of the problems into the narrative, thereby encouraging students to work problems as they read;
- incorporating more figures than other texts in order to help students visualize the reactions;
- discussing the hypothetical alternatives to some concepts such that students understand both how the current theory works and why other theories don’t. An example is the presentation of the tetrahedral structure of methane, which is followed by an exploration of other structural hypotheses.
Informal and Engaging Prose
Professor Jones’s love of organic chemistry comes through in anecdotes, jokes, and creative analogies. He provides advice, sympathy, and encouragement at those points where he knows students struggle.
Updated Content
- Enhanced coverage of synthesis, including an early introduction to the topic in Chapter 3, more emphasis on how to do synthesis, and additional new synthesis problems in many chapters
- Earlier coverage of reactions, with a major introduction to additional reactions now in Chapter 3
- More coverage of acids and bases, including sections in Chapters 1 through 3 and a review in Chapter 7
- New Chapter 6—integrated and condensed coverage of alcohols and amines, replacing Chapters 16 and 20 and incorporating a new section on solvent properties
Efficient New Design
The Third Edition has been redesigned to make it easier for students to navigate the text and focus on the science.
Enhanced Pedagogy
- NEW summary sections have been interspersed within chapters to summarize key concepts and points, especially after conceptually challenging material. There are now five to six in-chapter summaries per chapter.
- NEW chapter previews include chapter outlines as well as Essential Skills and Important Details sections, which identify the key skills, concepts, and facts that the chapter will present.
- Convention Alerts identify important nomenclature, symbols, and drawing conventions that must be memorized.
- Extensive end-of-chapter summaries include sections on New Concepts, Reactions, and Syntheses, as well as the very popular Common Errors sections.
Integrated Software Program
- Organic Reaction Animations (ORA) 3.0 represents over 50 reactions, signaled by marginal icons in the text.
- Organic Reaction Animations Interactive, a new, interactive version of the animations software, allows the user to rotate and zoom within the reactions as they happen and includes optional voiceover narration. A new feature will allow instructors to expand the reaction to the full screen for use in lecture.
- The Student Web site, ORGO 3D Web, includes over 350 molecules in Chem3D, along with focus questions that encourage students to analyze the structures. New icons in the text will identify molecules that are included on ORGO 3D Web.
Abundant problems
Organic Chemistry provides an abundant number of solved problems in each chapter that help students hone their skills. A supplemental problem set (available in student and instructor versions) offers over 700 additional problems.
