The structure of this site uses contemporary pedagogical techniques to help you strengthen your study habits.  The site is organized into 3 parts: Organize, Learn and Connect.

1. Organize:

These study aides will help you prepare to learn the chapter material so that you can begin making sociological connections between everyday life and global change.

• Chapter Study Plans highlight the learning tools the site offers.  To keep track of your progress, print the study plan.
• Chapter Outlines provide an overview of the major ideas introduced in each chapter. Review the outline before you read the chapter.
• Chapter Learning Objectives answer the question: “what will you learn from this  chapter?”  Keep these broad objectives in mind as you read.

2. Learn:

Because people learn in different ways, there are a variety of activities to help you review your knowledge and apply what you have learned.

• Read the assigned chapter in your textbook or ebook. Then you might want to reread the Chapter Outlines as a review of those important concepts you should have grasped.
• Flashcards help you review key terms in each chapter.
• Diagnostic Quizzes for each chapter will help you identify which parts of the text you need to review more and will give you instant feedback on right and wrong answers.
• Short answer Review Exercises provide another way to think about and assimilate what you’ve learned.
• Annotated Graphs from the text with short answer exercises help you learn to analyze data and think critically about what it means.

3. Connect:

These resources help you to connect what you’ve learned to your own experiences and to the world around you.

• Video Clip Quizzes are short quizzes about clips from documentary films that explore sociological concepts from various perspectives.
• Behind the Headlines exercises teach you how to scrutinize news reports from a sociological perspective.
• Everydaysociologyblog.com short answer exercises allow you to respond to some of the interesting and topical posts on the everydaysociology.com blog. 
• Sociology in the News keeps you up-to-date—from a sociological perspective—about what’s happening in the world.
• The Norton Slideshow Maker with Visual Sociology Exercises allows you to use your own photographs and captions to respond to questions that will spark your sociological imagination (select chapters only).

About W. W. Norton

W. W. Norton & Company has been independent since its founding in 1923, when William Warder Norton and Margaret D. Norton first published lectures delivered at the People's Institute, the adult education division of New York City's Cooper Union. The Nortons soon expanded their program beyond the Institute, publishing books by celebrated academics from America and abroad. By mid-century, the two major pillars of Norton's publishing program—trade books and college texts—were firmly established. In the 1950s, the Norton family transferred control of the company to its employees, and today—with a staff of 400 and a comparable number of trade, college, and professional titles published each year—W. W. Norton & Company stands as the largest and oldest publishing house owned wholly by its employees.
