Chapter 17 : Religion in Modern Society

Thinking Sociologically Exercise

1. What do sociologists see as the role of religion in society? How can you relate your own experiences with religion with some of the classical views presented by Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber or the more contemporary views of the religious economists?

2. Using the concepts offered by your textbook, trace the development of a small religious sect into a cult, denomination, or established church. Explain how charismatic leadership might play a role in expanding the scope and importance of any religious organization.

3. Based upon your textbook's discussion, summarize the role of religion for most Americans today and assess whether religion is growing or shrinking in its importance for most people. Explain what it means for people to become more secular or fundamentalist in their religious practices. Are Americans becoming more secular or fundamentalist in their religious observances?

4. This chapter has provided insights into the sociological study of religion. Briefly summarize what the focus of this study is and then develop your own research study of religion, based on a question or area of religion that is of interest to you.

5. One of the most important trends in global religion today is the rise of religious nationalism. Although these developments are happening in other parts of the world they still have a direct impact on American society because of globalization. Consider the factors that have contributed to the global rise of religious nationalism and discuss how you see your world affected by the emergence of religious nationalism.

6. Discuss the role that women have traditionally played in religion and how this reflects traditional gender roles. Speculate whether, as gender roles change, the role of women in religion will also change. In your own experiences with organized religion have you seen examples of change towards greater equality?
