Chapter 3 : Culture and Society

Thinking Sociologically Exercise

1. The task of social science is to do what, exactly, with the cultural diversity of the modern world?

2. In what way does culture serve as a society’s glue?

3. Describe a way modern communication technology could act or has acted to reinforce local traditional cultural norms or practices.

4. Go through the clothing in your closet and record a list of all the different nations listed on the “Made in…” labels. How much do you know about the geography, level of industrialization, and culture of these places? Describe a way, other than the clothing, that your life is connected to those of people living in these other countries. Is there any reason you should care about the conditions of their lives?

5. Discuss the implications of the following: “Human behavior is oriented toward the symbols we use to represent ‘reality,’ rather than to the reality itself--and these symbols are determined within a particular culture.”
