Chapter 12

1. Knowing what you now know about emotion, if you were to redo the Ekman study of facial expression in a culture that had had no contact with Western culture, how would you redo the study? What methodological pitfalls of Ekman's study would you avoid? Where would you expect to document universality of expression? And where would you expect to find cultural variation?

2. Are emotions rational? Define what you mean by rational, and provide evidence arguing for the claim that emotions are rational.

3. Do we know what makes us happy? Why is it that we often seem to have little knowledge about what will make us happy or not? In a related vein, what insights did you glean from this chapter regarding living a more satisfying life.
