Chapter 4

1. A central theme of this chapter is that our relationships influence how we construe our social worlds. Can you think of how our relationships influence: (a) our self-concept; (b) how we attend to and remember social information; and (c) the explanations we offer for our own and others' behavior?

2. Imagine that you are working in a preschool near your college, and each day you are present when the parents drop off their children. One child, upon being dropped off, expresses extreme distress and anger when his parents leave. How would you classify this child's attachment style? As the child matures into adulthood, what would you expect of his relationships with others and the particular difficultieshe might encounter?

3. If you were on a radio show and were asked to provide ten tips for avoiding divorce and having a satisfying marriage, what advice would you give? More specifically, what five things would you encourage people thinking about marrying to do to avoid marital problems? And what five things would you recommend to bring greater pleasure and joy to their relationship?
