1. It's a serious problem for expensive restaurants in Manhattan when reservation holders don't show up. The restaurants lose a considerable amount of overhead for each no-show. Many restaurants have made it a custom to ask patrons to "Please call us if you won't be able to make it." Recently, some restaurants have started asking instead, "Will you call us if you're not able to make it?" Would you think this would be more effective than the standard request, or less? Why?
2. Suppose you are making "get out the vote" calls for a political party the night before the election. What would you say to increase the likelihood that voters would actually make it to the polls?
3. Aristotle's moral philosophy was based on what has come to be called "virtue ethics." He encouraged people to strive to develop all the character traits of a virtuous person. Do you see limits to how much can be achieved by such a moral philosophy? How could it be profitably supplemented?
