Chapter 17: What You Know About You: The Self

Is it difficult to describe the Implicit Association Test in words or in pictures on a PowerPoint slide? To really understand how the IAT works, you will probably need to take one. The good news is that it is not time consuming (less than 30 minutes to take the test, read your results, and reflect on what they might mean). It is also among the most interesting personality tests I have ever taken (and I've taken a lot of them along with my psychological testing students and in developing my personality theories).

Personally, I chose to take the gender-career IAT, and I found it described my gender-work attitudes perfectly accurately. You can choose to take any test you would like; they all function exactly the same way. Make sure you take the time to read and consider the directions, disclaimers, and your results. Also on this web site you will find a bio of Dr. Greenwald and his colleagues, Dr. Nosek and Dr. Banaji. You can also learn more about Project Implicit at this site.
