Stages of Moral Reasoning

Your responses to a hypothetical dilemma are evaluated in terms of Kolberg's six stages of moral reasoning, and in terms of Gilligan's arguments concerning the role of empathy and compassion in moral reasoning.

In chapter 14 you learned that the study of moral development has been strongly affected by Kohlberg's analysis of progressive stages in moral reasoning. According to a later critique by Carol Gilligan, there are some important sex differences in moral orientation, with men emphasizing justice and women stressing human relationships and compassion. Further differences have been found between different cultural groups.

Baby Physics

In this tutorial four brief animated sequences each contradict some basic physical principle that governs our world. You then learn how infants respond to such stimuli, and are asked to consider whether Piaget's theory of cognitive development can be reconciled with these findings.
