Chapter 16: Government and Economy
Study Plan
In this chapter, we will:
- look at the goals of economic policy. These include promoting stable markets, promoting economic prosperity, promoting business development, and protecting employees and consumers. We then examine four schools of economic thought that government officials have relied on as they formulate priorities and strategies for economic policy.
- classify and review the tools of economic policy. Our discussion will focus on four major categories: monetary policies, fiscal policies, regulatory policies, and subsidies and contracting.
- assess the politics of economic policy making. We will look at the debate among political leaders over the priorities of economic policy and the role that interest groups play in that debate. We will also examine whether economic policies serve special interests or the public interest.
- examine the environment and the economy. Although environmental goals have intersected with economic policy concerns in the past, concern about global warming has brought new prominence to this issue. We will examine the profound economic consequences and opportunities posed by global climate change.
- conclude by looking at how citizens can evaluate the ways that economic policies affect them.
