Chapter 7: The Media
Study Plan
In this chapter, we will:
- look at the organization and regulation of the American news media. The media industry continues to grow larger but remains centralized, which results in little variety in what is reported about national issues. Despite the importance of freedom of the press in the United States, the media are still subject to some regulation by the government.
- discuss the factors that help to determine what’s “news.” The agenda of issues and type of coverage that the media provide are affected most by those who create the news and those who consume the news.
- examine the scope of media power in politics. What the media report can have far-reaching effects on public perceptions of political events, issues, leaders, and institutions.
