Chapter 6: Public Opinion
Study Plan
In this chapter, we will:
- examine the political values and beliefs that inform how Americans perceive the political process. After reviewing the most basic American political values, we will analyze how values and beliefs are formed and how certain processes and institutions influence their formation. We conclude this introductory section by looking at how a person’s values and beliefs relate to political ideology.
- review the process of how political opinions are formed. We begin by assessing the relative importance of ideology in this process. We then look at how a person’s knowledge of politics—and the influence of political leaders, private groups, and the media—affect the formation of political views.
- describe the science of gathering and measuring public opinion. The reliability of public opinion is directly related to the way in which it is gathered. Despite the limitations of public opinion polls, they remain an important part of the American political process.
