Chapter 1: American Political Culture
Study Plan
In this chapter, we will:
- assess what Americans think about their government. Although Americans rely on government for many of their needs, trust in government and the belief that individuals can influence government have both been in decline.
- explore the principle of democratic citizenship. We believe that good citizenship begins with political knowledge—knowledge of government, of politics, and of democratic principles. With this knowledge, citizens can identify their interests and take advantage of their opportunities to influence politics.
- look at the principles of government and politics. The relationship between a government and its citizens is especially dependent on the form that a government takes. We will look at alternative forms of government and key differences among them. We will also examine the factors that led to the emergence of representative democracy in the United States and elsewhere around the world.
- look at who the American people are, and how the changing characteristics of the population have consistently contributed to political debates. We will assess how well the American political system upholds the values of liberty, equality, and democracy for all Americans.
- look at American political culture. Here, we will examine the political principles that serve as the basis for American government.
