What You Can Do

We the People highlights the themes of liberty, equality, and democracy in the U.S. political system. Now it is time to look at the rest of the world. Go to the Web site for Amnesty International (www.amnesty.org); select two nations, one a developed nation and the other from the Third World, and read the latest reports on human rights violations in both countries.

  1. How did these two countries compare? Where did you expect to find the greatest number of abuses? Were your suspicions confirmed?

  1. In what ways are human liberties violated around the world? Were you surprised at these violations of human rights? Explain.

  1. Do you think that public information campaigns such as those carried out by Amnesty International have any effect on political leaders? Explain

  1. Does U.S. foreign policy promote human rights and democracy around the world? Should it? Explain.

  1. How well, in your opinion, does the United States exemplify the values of liberty, equality, and democracy? What are our strengths? Our weaknesses? How do we compare with the rest of the world?
