What You Can Do

The basic building block of U.S. political parties is the local organization. Look in your telephone book for the location of the county office of the party of your choice. Call the office to arrange a visit where you can learn what the local party does and how one can volunteer to help. You may choose to visit with your college campus’s political party organizations instead.

  1. Who runs this political party at the local level? Does it have a paid staff or volunteers?

  1. What does the local office do between elections?

  1. Did the local party officials encourage you to participate and volunteer your time?

  1. What are the areas of greatest need for volunteers at this office?

  1. Did you feel that you could participate in the local political party if you wanted to, or did you feel that it was a closed club? Explain
