Chapter 9

Chapter 9: Interest Groups

Critical Thinking Questions

1. The chapter describes the last few decades’ massive increases in the number of interest groups and lobbyists and in the amount spent on lobbying. What factors could cause this increase to level off or even reverse?
2. A friend complains to you about the enormous power of organized interests in American politics, citing a group’s recent victory in getting members of Congress to approve their policy proposal. Present three other explanations for this victory that have nothing to do with the political power of the interest group.
3. As described in this chapter, college students are a latent group in American politics. Based on the logic of collective action, what would an interest group entrepreneur have to do to organize this group?
