Chapter 6: The Media

Critical Thinking Questions

1. One argument against deregulating the media is that consolidation and the formation of media conglomerates will reduce the number of independent sources of information that are available to the average American. Based on the media sources that you and your friends use, do you agree or disagree with this argument? Why?
2. To what extent are journalists, editors, and the owners of media businesses to blame for the fact that the average American is often uninformed about, and uninterested in, politics?
3. What advice would you give to people who want to learn about American politics? What types of media sources should they seek, which ones should they avoid, and why?
