Chapter 6: Further Applications of Newton’s Laws

Online Concept Tutorials

Friction

This tutorial explores the microscopic reasons for friction and uses interactive animations that allow the student to arrive at an equation for friction on the macroscopic level. It also discusses the difference between kinetic and static friction.

Use an interactive animation of masses being pulled across surfaces to see how static and kinetic friction vary with normal force and with the type of material the mass and surface are composed of. Use the lab notebook to store the data, to make a plot, and to determine the relevant functional relations.
