You will find melodic lines moving in parallel thirds or sixths in many types of Western music, not just common-practice compositions. Listen, for example, to the second phrase of Scott Joplin's piano rag "Solace" (CD1, track xx, mm. 57-60), given in music notation below. Measure 57 opens with parallel thirds between the alto and bass voices, and measures 58-59 feature parallel sixths between alto and tenor. Harmonizing a melodic line in parallel thirds or tenths is common in songs as well.
