In traditional strict species counterpoint exercises, the given line (cantus firmus) is notated in whole notes; the third-species counterpoint is in quarter notes. In addition, the rules for dissonance treatment in Fux’'s counterpoint are stricter (no incomplete neighbors, except in very limited contexts). In eighteenth-century practice, the most common notation of 4:1 uses a quarter note for the slower-moving line and sixteenth notes for the faster line.
