Fanny Hensel's brother was Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Before the last half
of the twentieth century, women composers' compositions were not taken seriously by the
musical establishment, and women were actively discouraged from pursuing careers in
composition. Although she was tutored in composition and wrote about 300 songs, few of
Hensel’s songs have been published. Sometimes women had to publish their music under the
names of male relatives, simply in order to get them into print. (Some of Hensel's pieces, for
example, are included in her brother's publications under his name.)
