In the twentieth century, composers have drawn musical material from other symmetrical collections, such as the whole tone (whose scale is made up entirely of consecutive whole steps) and the octatonic (whose scale contains alternating whole and half steps). Some composers associated with symmetrical collections include Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, and Olivier Messiaen. Read more about these composers and their music in Chapter 30.
