Unit XIII: The Eighteenth-Century Concerto and Sonata (chaps. 36-37)
LESSON INDEX
Overview
In this unit, we will review the traditional structure of the concerto and the sonata and see how each developed in the hands of a Viennese master (Mozart and Beethoven, respectively). We will note the significant role that women played as virtuoso performers in this era and see how the sonata in particular was appropriate for amateurs and home music-making. We will further investigate how and why Turkish music, notably Janissary bands, influenced the works of the Viennese composers.
