Key Points

The Mass, Requiem Mass, and the oratorio were the dominant choral forms of the Classical era.
Mozart's Requiem Mass (Mass for the Dead) is one of the masterworks of the Classical era; the composer died before completing it.
Haydn wrote two oratorios, including The Creation, which is based on the book of Genesis and on John Milton's Paradise Lost.
Like Handel's Messiah, The Creation consists of solo arias, recitatives, ensembles, and choruses.
