Central Africa was very much a world unsettled in the late nineteenth century. To study the history of the "Congo" region during this time read Document 1 and Document 2. How was King Leopold able to exploit the people and resources of this region?
By the early twentieth century, however, much of world opinion began to realize the exact nature of King Leopold's rule in the Congo. Read Document 3, Document 4, and Document 5. Also read the essay and view the images at Document and Images 1. How did the public in the United States and Western Europe find out about the atrocities in the Congo Free State? Why did so many join organizations to end the abuses? How successful were they? How did the entire episode led to anxieties in Western Europe and the United States over Imperialism in general? Would you agree or disagree that the Congo Reform Movement was an anti-colonial movement?
