The Cold War between the first and second worlds in the after World War II emerged out of differing visions for a post war Europe between the United States and the Soviet Union. In addition, ideological differences and mutual distrust fueled the flames of tension.

Go to Document 1. Read the Episode Recap. What tensions emerged in Europe in the aftermath of World War II? Read Document 2, Document 3, Document 4 and Document 5. How did leaders and policy makers in the first and second world react to each others actions in postwar Europe? What were the sources of their growing distrust? What kind of post war order did they envision for the world?
Go to Document 6. Read the Episode Recap. How did tension between the first and second worlds harden after 1947? What did each side fear from the other? Read Document 7, Document 8, and Document 9. Analyze Image 1 and Image 2. How did leaders and opinion makers portray their own and their antagonists' motives in promoting European recovery? Why did they increasingly view and portray each other as the biggest threat to their own security?
Is one side to blame for the origins of the Cold War. Complete the the simulation and Document 10. Can one pin point blame on one side or the other or are both mutually responsible for the Cold War? Was the conflict preventable?
