Overview

Why did the United States lead coalition forces against Iraq in 1991?

The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was the first post-Cold War foreign policy crisis for the United States. President George H.W. Bush determined that the violation of Kuwaiti sovereignty threatened American security and asked Congress to approve the use of force against Iraq. Congress agreed, and in Operation Desert Storm began in January 1991.
