Overview

The first African laborers arrived in the British colonies in 1619. Over the next two centuries, some 10 to 13 million Africans were forcibly removed from their homelands to work in North America. Their journey across the Atlantic, known as the Middle Passage, was a period of suffering and death that awoke them to the harsh realities of slavery.
