Sources of Freedom. Daily Worker Cartoons (1927)

In May 1920, police arrested two Italian immigrants for the murder of a bank security guard during a robbery in South Braintree, Massachusetts. The two men, Nicola Sacco and Bartolemeo Vanzetti, were avowed anarchists who did not reject violence as a legitimate weapon for the powerless masses. However, the evidence connecting them to the robbery and murder was very weak. Their long trial and appeals first attracted international attention and then inspired a large domestic movement that saw the two men as symbols of the excesses of the national and local government campaign against radicals of all persuasions. In this series of cartoons from the communist newspaper, the Daily Worker, the case of Sacco and Vanzetti was cast as a terrible travesty of justice and a betrayal of freedom.
