Geotour 15: Landscapes of Oceans and Coasts

Sea-Floor Bathymetry

1a. As you have seen in previous chapters, the sea-floor is not flat and featureless, but rather has numerous interesting landforms that reveal much about geologic processes active on our planet.

Check and double-click the placemarks for Problems 1a-i, -ii, and -iii to fly to the southern tip of South America. Identify the bathymetric feature associated with each placemark.

1b. Check and double-click the placemarks for Problems 1b-i, -ii, and -iii. Identify the bathymetric feature associated with each placemark.
1c. Check and double-click the placemarks for Problem 1c-i and 1c-ii. Which placemark shows bathymetry associated with an active margin and a passive margin?

Coral Reefs

2a. Coral reefs are communities of live organisms that can build spectacular landforms in relatively shallow water depths (<60 m) at low latitudes (<30°).

Check and double-click placemark Problem 2a to fly to some scenic islands in the South Pacific. What kind of reef is surrounding the island?

2b. Check and double-click placemark Problem 2b to fly to a nearby island in the South Pacific. What kind of reef is surrounding the island?
2c. Check and double-click placemark Problem 2c to fly to another nearby area. What kind of reef is present here?

Barrier Islands & Spits

3a. Barrier islands, beaches, and spits form in areas with abundant sand.

Check and double-click placemark Problem 3a to fly to Cape Hatteras off the coast of North Carolina. Use the Hand Tool to determine how high waves would have to be to top the area specified by the placemark.

3b. Why is most of the construction on the lagoon side of the barrier island?
3c. What is the feature highlighted by placemark Problem 3c?
3d. Check and double-click the placemarks for Problem 3d to fly to Cape Cod, MA. Here, the remains of an E-W oriented glacial moraine is being reshaped into a spit by a longshore current. What is the general direction of the current?
3e. Piers or groins have been built out into Lake Michigan in Chicago to prevent sand erosion (placemark Problem 3e). Which direction is the current that is moving the sand?

Coastlines & Sea-Level Rise

4a. Turn on the “U.S. East Coast Sea Level Changes” overlay (make it semi-transparent) and double-click the placemarks for Problems 4a-i, -ii, -iii, and -iv in the Problem 4 folder.

If the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets melt, where would you want to own land?
