4The
Rule of Thirds — Predating cinema by many centuries,
the rule of thirds marks the intersection of movies and less dynamic
forms of visual art—painting, sculpture, and architecture.
When we note the "painterly" composition style of a
particular movie image, we very often are seeing the rule of thirds
at work.
4The
Steadicam and Camera Movement — If you have
ever shot film or video using a handheld camera, or if you have
seen someone else's unedited footage, you know that handheld cinematography
seems to exaggerate every movement, from an intentional pan to
an unintentional bump or jiggle.
4Special
Effects Companies —Industrial Light and Magic,
a division of director George Lucas's company, Lucasfilm, has
an illustrious filmography that begins with films such as Lucas's
Star Wars (1977) and Steven Spielberg's Raiders of
the Lost Ark (1981) and includes recent films such as Jonathan
Mostow's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) and
Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the
Black Pearl (2003).
