Annie Leonard

American environmental activist and filmmaker. A native of Seattle, Leonard earned a bachelor's degree from Barnard College and a master's degree in city and regional planning from Cornell University. Her career has been devoted to promoting sustainability and curbing the excesses of consumerism, particularly the common practice of using poor countries as a dumping ground for the garbage and hazardous waste produced by rich countries. This work led her to create an animated documentary film, The Story of Stuff (2007), about the life cycle of material goods—manufacture, distribution, use, and disposal. She has now created a series of "Story of" films, including The Story of Cap and Trade (2009), The Story of Electronics (2010), and The Story of Solutions (2013). Her book version of The Story of Stuff came out in 2010. In 2014 she was named executive director of Greenpeace USA. See also storyofstuff.org.
