Leslie Jamison

American novelist and essayist. Jamison was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Los Angeles. She earned a B.A. in English at Harvard University, studied in the Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in English literature at Yale University, where she is investigating addiction narratives. Her own writing has appeared in such publications as Harper's Magazine, Oxford American, the Believer, and the New York Times Book Review, where she is a columnist. Her first novel, The Gin Closet (2010), was named one of the best books of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle. The Empathy Exams (2014), a collection of essays that explores responses to both our own pain and the pain of others, was published in 2014 and immediately hailed as a literary triumph.
