Alison Bechdel

American cartoonist. Bechdel was born and raised in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, and attended Simon's Rock College and Oberlin University, where she earned her B.A. degree. In 1983 she began her long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, first published in the feminist weekly Womannews. Over the next twenty-five years, Dykes evolved from a single panel to a multi-panel strip featuring a growing cast of characters and a complex web of relationships. Her bestselling graphic memoir Fun Home (2006) was adapted into the Tony award–winning musical play (2015); Bechdel followed it with Are You My Mother?: A Comic Drama (2012), another commercial and critical success. In 2014 Bechdel received a MacArthur Fellowship. She presently lives, draws, and blogs in Vermont. See also dykestowatchoutfor.com.
