Susan Allen Toth (b. 1940)

American essayist, memoirist, and travel writer. Born in Ames, Iowa, Toth was educated at Smith College, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota. She taught English at Macalester College until she was in her mid-thirties, when she became a freelance travel writer and autobiographer. Her memoirs include Blooming: A Small-Town Girlhood (1981), Ivy Days: Making My Own Way Back East (1984), and Leaning into the Wind: A Memoir of Midwest Weather (2003). Toth frequently writes about her travels in England for the New York Times and has published three books about this favorite destination: My Love Affair with England: A Traveler’s Memoir (1992), England as You Like It (1995), and England for All Seasons (1997).
