Jonathan Kozol

An educator, activist, and award-winning writer, Jonathan Kozol (b. 1936) is known for his work as an advocate for social justice and public education. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Fire in the Ashes: Twenty-Five Years among the Poorest Children in America (2012) and The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America (2005), from which the following selection is taken. In this piece, Kozol reports on one of the many schools he studied to write this book.
