Geeta Kothari (b. 1962) has published stories and essays in numerous newspapers, journals, and anthologies. She teaches writing at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is director of the Writing Center, and is the editor of Did My Mama Like to Dance? and Other Stories about Mothers and Daughters (1994). The following reflection first appeared in 1999 in the Kenyon Review, a literary journal published at Kenyon College. As you read, notice how Kothari incorporates vivid anecdotes to illustrate the competing cultural experiences that complicate her sense of identity.
