Alex Horton (b. 1985)

U.S. Army veteran of the war in Iraq. A native of Texas, Horton now lives in Washington, D.C., where he writes for VAntage Point, a website hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to help vets navigate the federal bureaucracy and obtain their benefits. In 2006, Horton started a blog, Army of Dude, from his barracks simply to keep in touch with his family and to tell them about Army life. He had disliked writing in high school; but in the military, he says, “writing became my only creative outlet, a way to relay thoughts and experiences that I would never dare speak out loud. . . . This blog was a closely guarded secret.”
