Robert Connors (1951–2000)
Writing teacher at the University of New Hampshire. As a scholar, he focused on the history of writing and writing instruction. The author of Composition-Rhetoric: Backgrounds, Theory, and Pedagogy (1997), Connors published many influential journal articles on topics ranging from the comments teachers make on student papers to the history of citation systems. In 1981, Connors received the Braddock Award for his article on the modes of discourse—a study of the very methods taught in this book. When his life was abruptly ended by a motorcycle accident in 2000, the University of New Hampshire named its writing center for him—a center Connors himself had established there a decade earlier.
