Peer Editing

This exercise asks you to give detailed feedback to a classmate about his or her essay. Read the essay carefully before you start the exercise, and make sure you have it handy so you can refer to it while answering the questions. Try to be as specific as you can in your comments, using examples from the essay where appropriate.

1 What do you like best about the essay?
2 Do the opening lines grab your attention? Why or why not?
3 What is the point of the essay? Does the writer develop this point effectively throughout the entire essay?
4 Are there any places at which you get lost?
5 Which paragraphs are well developed? Which paragraphs need to be revised? In what ways?
6 Does the conclusion summarize or point forward? Can you suggest improvements?
