This glossary defines key terms and concepts.
Please note that words set in small capital letters are
themselves defined in the glossary.

textual analysis A genre of writing in which a
writer looks at what a text says and how it says it.
See also analysis and literary analysis. Key Features:
summary of the text • attention to context • clear
interpretation or judgment • reasonable support for
your conclusions
thesis A claim or statement of a writer's position
or main point.
tone A writer's or speaker's attitude toward his or
her readers and subject. A writer's tone reflects his
or her stance, and may be formal or informal, optimistic
or pessimistic, playful, ironic, and so on.
topic proposal A statement of intent to examine a
topic; also called a proposal abstract. Some instructors
require a topic proposal in order to assess the
feasibility of the writing project that a student has in
mind. Key Features: concise discussion of the subject
• clear statement of the intended focus • rationale for
choosing the subject • mention of resources
transition A word or phrase used to make clear
the connection between ideas in a text.
